Thursday Doors, 17/1/19: Žužemberk Castle

Hello and welcome to another edition of Thursday Doors in which it’s not so much about the doors but about the experience. We are on a visit to the south of Slovenia and one of its numerous castles.

I visited Žužemberk in the last days of my summer stay back in Slovenia – where I’m from – after the lovely breakfast with my friend who celebrated yesterday. The day was not all that but I decided to drive for a bit and this is where the road took me.

The castle is right next to the main road, all open and accessible, free to enter with minimum visitors (whereas in Italy it would be 15 eur), and yet nicely organised with plenty to see and explore.

Follow me along and read the captions for more info, say on lynx. There will be witches, as for doors, there are some but sometimes there are just holes in walls, leaving us to draw in our own doors.

  Here we are. This castle looks like one an imaginative child would draw.

  It’s full of holes through which another world is peeking.

  There are many little nooks with special uses. The signpost shows the ways.

  It was strange to see a furnished room without a door. The Žužemberk coat-of-arms on the wall again.

  Sofa and all. Behind it there are stairs down to the Lynx Hall.

  The Lynx Hall is full of humorous drawings doing away with preconceptions. Here a wolf and a lynx are showed reluctant to fight. Majority believe they are rivals, it seems.

  The Singing Room. Obviously with fine acoustics. I may have hollered. Do you see the little window? I looked through.

  I know! It’s like a video game!

  What happens down there? I bet on wine. This is one of Slovenia’s prime wine-growing regions.

  Goodbye, castle! You’re very nice and much fun. This door doesn’t seem thick enough to keep enemies out anyway. Better leave it open some more.
