Yesterday was one of those, you know, I’m-glad-I-spent-it-with-you perfect days. First the poem, then the proofs.
Spices for the perfect day
An air-conned road trip
at 42 degrees C
while at home klima is out of service.
Travelling uncleberry
left home to dogsit.
Maremma, basking, burning slightly,
sienna-coloured earth of the vineyards.
Pretty city.
Free parking waiting.
Doors, windows, stonework, cat in a door.
Exhibition of a friend,
online rolling into real,
her first.
She had painted me
without prior notice.
My portrait is called
“Sweet 17”,
that’s how much I was at the time.
I see it and choke.
It’s surrounded by portraits of women
with eyes
full of things unsaid
and a toad
and a hare
and Maremma.
The light in the paintings
equals the light within.
Later, gelato.
Looking at dogs in the supermarket
(shopping with owners, not being shopped).
Fooling around in the car.
When we return,
dog happy.
Pizza and beer with uncle.
Today, my friend writes:
“Next time it will be me coming to your exhibition,”
And I choke again.
We will return to this day on a Thursday for doors and on a regular day for more photos from the exhibition, today just all the necessary spices to serve this special dish while it’s hot.
If you are near, the gallery is called Portale delle Arti and is situated under the library in Massa Marittima. The exhibition entitled Lo sguardo (The Look) is open until next Saturday from 4 to 7 pm.
A previous post with the original photo and more info on the portrait (and another poem for Pic and a Word Challenge) can be found here. Thank you so much, Donna!
In response to Patrick Jennings’ Pic and a Word Challenge #193: Spicy
I heard it was 45 in some parts of Italy and France. And it’s still June.

Yeah. That’s how we’re going out, fluttering and in search of moisture, like the butterflies outside my window.

Well. I’m intrigued. You sure know how to keep your readers coming back for more!

Ahh, I do? Why, thank you, Susanne. 🙂 Does this mean that in a parallel life I am the author of a tense series of 45 books that sell like honey and everybody loves but no one understands? 😉 Just teasing. I’m really happy that you are intrigued. It was a beautiful occasion.

👍 42 degrees and on the road again 👍 we did the same today at baking 38 degrees and it is somehow exhausting but we have seen a nice exhibition in an old turbinehall at a nice lake. Now waiting for 21-26 degrees on Tuesday, as otherwise I will not feel at home again. 🥳

Thanks, Ulli. Yes, I think the solution is to just go. 🙂 Today it’s much better already. I’m glad you had a great day as well.

When is it supposed to cool down? Your heat is unbelievable! Still, you made the best of it. This looks like a great way to spend the day. I especially like the image of Donna Stiles and her self portrait.

Thank you so much, Patti. I’m especially glad that you like this photo. She quite likes it herself even though she hates having her photo taken. 😉 It is cooling down yet, slowly but surely. I can even breathe right now. When I go to Slovenia in a couple of weeks, I’ll be freezing at 25 and missing the heat. 😀

That’s what happened to us when we left Italy and came to Dublin!!

Dogs in the supermarket! Wow!

😀 Quite, Joey. Italians love their dogs and take them everywhere. Most of the restaurants allow them. Supermarkets have special vehicles for (small) dogs.

Sounds like a perfect day despite the heat. Most importantly you remember to pause a moment to appreciate it. Never lose that quality my friend 🙂

Thank you so much, Norm. When I lose that, I’m dead.
