Lens-Artists PC: There goes the neighbourhood

If you know the song from the title, we would probably be good friends 25 years ago when I was as hard core as my neighbourhood in the north of Ljubljana. Which is barely.

The hood is Bežigrad, one of five districts that make up Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. This is where I was born. Its name roughly translates as Runaway city. I stayed put in the same street for 43 years but then I did it. Run.

And since I’ve just come across another Rumi quote that lit a bulb, here it is. This is exactly how I’ve been living my life and cannot recommend it enough.

And now I invite you on a stroll around the block to revisit some of the views from all my life until six years ago.

It’s middle, Mitteleuropa, central, but hardly South Central. It’s in the middle between east and west, north and south, hot and cold, good and bad. Middle-of-the-road.

Was it always this pretty? Do I see it differently now that I’m away?

Oh, maybe to you it won’t be pretty at all. After all it’s not Tuscany where I live now, but neither is it Detroit. It’s home in the meaning of this post at Immortal Jukebox which I read today and listened to all five versions of Detroit City. Hard core, telling you.

If you don’t know this song, it’s the one with the chorus: I want to go home. Let’s go.
